Instructor: Sobaz Benjamin
Sobaz Benjamin, first and foremost a storyteller, is the Founder and Executive Director of an innovative, arts-based, youth and adult engagement, empowerment and reintegration not-for-profit in Halifax, called In My Own Voice (iMOVe) Arts Association,(2007). Sobaz is a documentary film-maker, as well as a community developer, advocate, youth mentor, program director, facilitator, public speaker: a Social Entrepreneur.
His work has been screened across Canada and in venues and Festivals in New Zealand, Bermuda and New York. He has completed documentaries for the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Sobaz uses his experience as an independent filmmaker in his community- based work with marginalized youth, adults and community.
AFCOOP’s NEW Workshop Access Policy
AFCOOP recognizes there are systemic inequities which create barriers for people in accessing film training. In an effort to address and recognize historical and present-day inequities we have created a new pay-what-you-can style pricing plan for our Fall Workshop series. Please feel free to sign up for whatever price-point you are most comfortable with. No questions asked.
$25 - regular rate. This rate covers the cost of paying our instructor (instructors are paid $40/hr) as well as the cost of staff time to organize and promote the workshop.
$15 - reduced rate. This rate makes a contribution towards our costs.
$0 - FREE :) This rate acknowledges that financial means should not be a barrier to becoming a filmmaker.
