WIFT-Vancouver has extended the deadline for their Genre-Based Screenwriting Competition "From Our Dark Side" to January 4. To get more Atlantic participants, AFCOOP is partnering up with WIFT-V on Tuesday, December 1 at 5:30 PM when WIFT-V will give an info session via skype about the competition. Following this info session, AFCOOP offers a "Writing for Horror Workshop" taught by Mark Palermo. In the following weeks, Mark will be giving one on one feedback to workshop participants on their script or treatment to prepare them to submit to "From Our Dark Side".
Writing for Horror:
Red, blood, guts, murder, mystery, and the written word: This specified workshop focuses on writing screenplays for horror films. Taught by terrifying expert, Mark Palermo, this class will go over how to be creative while avoiding clichés. You will surely be excited and horrified simultaneously by the depth of knowledge that you receive through this three hour seminar.
Mark Palermo is a local writer and filmmaker.
His feature screenplay Detention (co-authored with its director, music video veteran Joseph Kahn) was independently produced, and then distributed theatrically by Sony Pictures in 2012. The teen comedy/horror genre mashup stars Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), Dane Cook (Mr. Brooks), Shanley Caswell (The Conjuring), and Spencer Locke (Resident Evil: Extinction).Detention had a strong run at film festivals, premiering at South By Southwest, and garnering some enthusiastic reviews and a devoted cult.
Palermo was the chief film critic for The Coast, Halifax's Weekly from 1999 to 2011. Over this period, Palermo reviewed over 2000 films. He has conducted interviews with such filmmakers as Atom Egoyan, Rob Zombie, Mira Nair, Guillermo del Toro, and John Dahl. His cultural essays have more recently been published online at PopMatters and CHUD.com.
Additionally, Palermo has written television commercial and music video treatments. These projects have included work for Burger King, Taco Bell, Johnnie Walker, HP, Lexus, and Verizon, and many others, and have involved artists such as Rihanna, Vanessa Hudgens, Keri Hilson, Nicole Scherzinger and Mariah Carey.
As movies were always his primary interest, Palermo wrote and directed several local short films during this time. The Killing of Kings (2004) was a 30-min horror movie shot for a few hundred dollars. The youth sex comedy Later That Stevening followed in 2006. Both movies show an affinity for combing different genres within a single narrative.
In 2008, he directed the music video "The Route" for Canadian rapper Wordburglar. It received considerable airplay on MuchMusic.
He’s currently at work on a variety of projects.
