With limited funding available short filmmakers are finding themselves waiting around for money, and if they are lucky, getting funding to make a film once every couple of years. But what are we supposed to do in the mean time? This workshop is about finding ways to continue to make work without a significant budget. Like, with almost nothing. We will explore how to write a script that can be feasibly produced with no budget, non-union casting techniques, cheap options and tricks for camera and lighting, and much more. Workshop participants will also have a chance to present their short film ideas and receive feedback and advice on making them no-budget friendly.

Instructors: Heather Young & Brittany Amos

Heather Young went to school at UNB (English) and NSCAD (Film). Brittany Amos went to school at SMU (English) and UBC (Creative Writing). They went through AFCOOP's FILM5 program in 2013 together. They each have several short films under their belt. Heather's most recent is the no-budget short Howard and Jean that just screened at the Atlantic Film Festival and the Vancouver International Film Festival. Brittany is shooting a new short this fall and producing a feature in the new year through the Film NS/Telefilm First Feature program.
